Age Calculator formula

The date difference is the elapsed time between the selected calendar dates.

Elapsed days = end date − start date

Practical example

Choose any two dates to see the exact number of elapsed calendar days.

How the Age Calculator works

The calculator finds chronological age between a date of birth and a target date. It counts complete calendar years first, then complete calendar months, and finally the remaining days. This method respects different month lengths and leap years instead of treating every year as exactly 365 days.

Age calculation formula

There is no single fixed-length formula for calendar age because months contain 28, 29, 30 or 31 days. The reliable method is calendar subtraction: age = target date − date of birth, borrowing days from the preceding month and months from the preceding year when needed.

What the results include

The primary result shows years, months and days. Equivalent totals show elapsed months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds. These totals use complete 24-hour calendar days and do not attempt to adjust for historical daylight-saving transitions.

Leap-day birthdays

For a February 29 birth date, anniversary handling can depend on legal or organizational rules in non-leap years. This calculator uses normal Gregorian calendar arithmetic. Confirm the applicable rule when calculating legal age, eligibility or deadlines.

Common uses

  • Finding age on a past or future date.
  • Calculating time until the next birthday.
  • Checking elapsed time for records and applications.
  • Comparing ages or date intervals.

Important limitation

The result is informational. Legal age may depend on jurisdiction, the exact time of birth and rules about when an age is attained.
